Frozen Semen

A Wonder of Science

Frozen semen is a canine ejaculate mixed with a special media (extender) that allows it to survive in an inanimate state while it is stored in liquid nitrogen at -196° C (-321° F). That is very, very cold. In theory, it can be kept stored at this very low temperature indefinitely. In practice, we have used semen stored for 30+ years to perform TCI and obtained puppies. This incredible technology allows us to use genetics from males who live overseas, or are old and subfertile now, or even males who are now deceased. Some breeders use frozen semen to introduce new genetics into their kennels by breeding to males who live on the other side of the world. Other breeders use frozen semen to resurrect genetics from past generations and reinfuse traits that have been lost or diminished.

An Intricate Process, Requiring Expertise

The Art and Method of Semen Freezing

The process for freezing semen, storing, and then thawing it, expecting the delicate sperm to survive, requires strict attention to detail and advanced knowledge of reproductive and cellular biology. It is not just a “cookbook” approach that anyone with rudimentary training, a canopy tent, and a tank of liquid nitrogen can perform and expect to get consistent results. It is also our sad experience that most outfits offering semen freezing services grossly overestimate the quality of the frozen semen they produce, claiming much higher percentages of post-thaw motility than actually occurs and much higher total numbers of viable sperm than they actually provide.

It's Not All About the Stud Dog

Achieving Success with Frozen Semen Breeding

Success with frozen semen breeding requires that the semen be handled appropriately throughout the process. It is also equally important that, on the other side of the equation, the bitch management is handled with expertise.

The following are all key components to a successful frozen semen litter:

appropriate choice of a breeding bitch

careful monitoring of her estrous cycle to choose the right day to breed

correct handling of the frozen semen

transcervical insemination (TCI) by a qualified professional

The Kokopelli Difference

At Kokopelli Veterinary Center, we provide honest, transparent, state-of-the-art services:

Semen is frozen based on protocols developed after years of scientific testing.

Our veterinarians and technicians regularly attend conferences where we learn the latest information on sperm biology and we adjust our practices accordingly.

Our protocols are performed and supervised by veterinarians with years of experience and specialty training in reproductive sciences.

We use computer-assisted semen analysis tools to ensure the semen evaluations we perform are completely objective and not subject to any type of bias.

We do not charge you by the dose, which removes any temptation to overestimate the quality or quantity of the semen.

If you need to move your frozen semen elsewhere for breeding, we will not penalize you, charge you exorbitant fees, or restrict the timeline you can obtain the semen you own.

Dr. Christensen, a veterinarian with an advanced degree in reproductive physiology, is the only board-certified theriogenologist offering canine reproductive services in Northern California.
